Scotland up against the Irish after Day One

The sun never broke through at Cruden Bay on the first day of the defence of the Mary McKenna Perpetual trophy but it certainly shone over Scotland. It was a cold grey day with a chill wind off the North Sea but after day one Scotland is leading by 2 1/2 to 1 1/2.

The first couple, Fiona De Vries and Lorna Bennett won against Sheena McElroy and Marlene Henderson quite comfortably by a 3 and 2 margin but the final game has reputedly been a real cracker. The final pairing of Jill Harrison, playing on her home course and Fiona Hunter (Baberton) saw them all square going down the long eighteenth against Helen Jones and the legendary Mary McKenna. A lovely wood straight to the heart of the green, two putts and it was one up for Scotland.

Results (Scotland first)

Fiona de Vries and Lorna Bennett beat Sheena McElroy and Marlene Henderson 3 and 2

Heather Anderson and Mary Smith halved with Mary Madden and Pauline Walsh

Kathleen Sutherland and May Hughes lost to Valerie Hassett and Violet McBride by 2 and 1

Jill Harrison and Fiona Hunter beat Helen Jones and Mary McKenna by 1 hole

Same again tomorrow girls. (Random draw)
