Our Autumn Meeting was held today at Liberton Golf Course.

We were made very welcome by both Iain, the Pro, and the catering staff who apart from providing a great service offered the Committee, who were sitting outside, a hot water bottle as the temperature started to drop.

The scores were good due not only to the quality of play but to the fact that the course was in fantastic condition.

Congratulations to all the winners and a big thank you to Liberton Golf Club.

2021 Championship 5-10th July at Haddington Golf Course

    Quarter final results:

            Caroline Steedman bt Jenni Ray

Sal Shepherd lost to Dawn Young

Barbara Biggart lost to Karen Marshall

Jennifer Bryans lost to Ann Sewell

Saturday 10th July took us to the semifinals on (after all the rain) a lovely sunny day with very little wind. The golf course was in beautiful condition.

The results of the semifinals were:

Caroline bt Dawn
  Karen bt Ann

Both matches were keenly fought.

And so we come to the final between Caroline and Karen.

Caroline was quick off the mark and was 3 up by the 5th tee but a visit to the pond reduced this to 2 by the 6th. With interesting shots from the thick rough by Caroline and trees by Karen we get to the turn with Caroline 1 up but par for Karen to bogey for Caroline on the 10th took us to all square. Fast forward to the 15th tee and we are still A/S. Another woody visit by Caroline on the 15th and a brilliant curvy birdie putt by Karen on the 16th took her to 2 up on the 17th tee. (Here our glorious day ended with rain. 4 spectators with one brolly between them! )

A wayward OB tee shot from Caroline gave Karen a win on the 17th green. This was a very enjoyable match to watch, of the highest standard, and, as is often said, it is a pity there has to be a loser.

Well done Karen Marshall – our 2021 East Vets Champion.

Report on Elise Duncan Trophy East v West Match 1st June 2021

At long last the sun was shining for everyone and summer had arrived.

Our scratch team travelled to Douglas Park for our annual match v West Vets on Tuesday 1st June. Douglas Park is a lovely parkland course with some very interesting holes. Playing conditions were perfect with very little wind.

Looking back towards the 18th tee from the Clubhouse was stunning with the rhododendrons and azaleas in full bloom.

The result was a 5:4 win for East. Well done ladies.

Thanks must go to Chris Fowler and the West team for making us very welcome and providing a lovely meal afterwards. Chris, who lives in Glasgow which was in tier 3 (Douglas Park was in tier 2)  was only able to walk round the course – as part of her daily exercise within 5 miles of the boundary. Thanks, Chris, for your company on the course. Vice-Captain May Hughes stepped in for Chris in the Clubhouse.

All in all, a great day was had by all.

Match v Midland 15th May 2021

At last! We had a match to play. Or almost not!

Having checked with Mortonhall that all was well for our visit (with Covid restrictions in place) and, on the morning, that there was no rain due and that the wind was moderate, things were looking good. That was until I received a txt to say the course was closed due to FOG. Not on my check list!

However, the fog lifted and the course was reopened.

7 team players from each Division met up at Mortonhall to play for the Liz Miskimmin Friendship Trophy. It was good to meet up with old and new faces. The course may not have been at its best due to the severe weather conditions over the winter but we were made very welcome and everyone enjoyed their games. The result was a halved match which meant that Midland, who won last time, retained the trophy.

The cost of the entry is £124 per couple for the full event.  The SVLGA are not asking for payment of entry fees at this time. When the time comes we will ask you to pay by bank transfer to the East Vets account.

Following the latest announcement from the Scottish Government the Committee has decided to cancel the Spring Meeting at Winterfield.

With regard to the knock-out competitions we have decided not to run the Friendship Trophy (foursomes).
