Wooden Spoon for Scotland at The Senior Womens's Home Internationals

Scotland drew their "wooden spoon" final match with Wales at the Senior Women's Home Internationals at Newport, Wales.
The Scots led Wales 2-1 after the morning foursomes and started the singles well with Sheena Wood winning her third singles tie in a row, 3 and 2 against Ann Lewis, and Gillian Kyle winning out in the country, 8 and 7, against Patricia Fernon.
But Scotland lost the last three single, Frances Millar going down 5 and 3, Lesley Lloyd losing 2 and 1, and Donna Jackson being beaten 3 and 2.

Wales finished with a slightly better "games won" column, 9 to Scotland's 8.5, and so Scotland were placed last.

In the title-deciding match, Ireland and England, the two 100 per cent teams after two days of action, were drawing 1.5 apiece after the foursomes but wins by Gertie McMullen, Sheena McElroy and Laura Webb in the singles gave the Irish a 4.5-3.5 victory, ending England's bid for a fourth title in a row.

Position of Secretary and Treasurer for SVLGA

The SVLGA Secretary/Treasurer Alison Houston is not standing for a further term of office after the AGM in September 2018, having served for 4 years.  We are therefore looking for a replacement.

As there is quite a lot of work involved with this position, it has been agreed that it could be split, and we can appoint a Secretary and a Treasurer.  There is currently an honorarium for the Secretary position, and an honorarium would also be available for the Treasurer position.

If anyone would like to discuss what is involved as Secretary/Treasurer of  SVLGA please contact me on 07714 245173 or e mail svlgasecretary@gmail.com

If you would like to propose anyone, please get in touch.  It would be advantageous for the new lady to be in contact with Alison from time to time to get a feel for what is required during the year.

Blairgowrie

SVLGA Championship Result
Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) has won the Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association match-play championship over the Lansdowne course, Blairgowrie for a second time in three years against Jennifer Bryans (Turnhouse) by 4 and 3 in Monday's final. It was Jennifer who beat Sheena in last year's final when the Aberdeen player was defending the title she won in 2016.
Jennifer won the first with a birdie 4 but was soon brought back to square after three holes and Sheena gradually applied the pressure and was two up at the turn.
Jennifer had chances early in the second half but the soft conditions made it difficult to capitalize on them. Sheena sank a very long par putt on the 12th, when it looked like Jennifer's hole all the way, to go three up, and the game finished on the 15th with Sheena winning 4 and 3.
Sheena beat Tain's Mary Smith 3 and 2 in the morning semi-finals while Jennifer beat Margaret Locke (Dumfries and Galloway) 5 and 3.
Congratulations to Jennifer for a great effort in defending her title.

The weather on Monday morning was very wet with the Championship being delayed by 30 minutes.
The Patrick Rose Bowl on the Rosemount Course was also delayed by an hour and a half. This meant that the late players had to play in fours. Unfortunately the last few groups finished their rounds in the dark

Scratch:

1st: Heather Anderson (Blairgowrie) 78
2nd: Lynda Dyball (Pitreavie) 80
3rd: Frances Miller (Carnoustie Caledonia) 81

Handicap:

1st: Liz Hale (Caldwell) 84 (12) 72
2nd: Hazel Kelly (Ladies Panmure Barry) 94 (21) 73 bih
3rd: Joanne Sharp (Kilmarnock Barassie) 83 (10) 73 bih
4th: Heather Anderson (Blairgowrie) 78 (5) 73 bih
5th: Anna Telfer (Milngavie) 83 (8) 75 bih

East v Borders Greensomes Match at Minto GC on 12th September 2017

After a lovely drive down to Minto GC (including a wee detour for a couple of us, no names mentioned!), we were given a warm welcome by Anne Paterson and her team.

The golf course was in great condition but preferred lies were played due to some heavy rainfall the previous night. The weather was kind to us for the best part of the day and the matches were played in a fun but competitive spirit!

With 2 wins, 2 losses and 2 halved matches, the overall result was a draw.
A good outcome for an excellent day.
Here are the results:

Kate Johnston & Mary Richardson halved against Alison Smith & Margaret Wilkinson

Ellice Cackett & Susan Corrie lost to Venetia Scott & Dawn Tomlinson  3/2

Thanks to Anne and her team for their hospitality and to Minto GC catering staff for providing lovely warm homemade scones along with tea/coffee on arrival, as well as an excellent meal after the match.

Summer Meeting at Haddington 6th June 2017

Regretfully the Summer Meeting at Haddington today had to be abandoned when the green keeper declared the course unplayable and closed it. Unfortunately by this stage, a handful of ladies had managed to complete their round.  The Committee has been able to re-arrange a new date for the Summer Meeting and it is Friday 23rd June, at Haddington, with tee times from 8am to 12 noon. This will now be our Championship Qualifier.

To enter please email Dulcie on dulcie@jsbarnes.myzen.co.uk by 5pm on Thursday 15th June. Those ladies who are unavailable to play on this new date and who paid for today's competition, will have their £12 refunded in due course. The new draw will be emailed to all competitors no later than Sunday 18th June.

Any member who was not available on 6th June may enter on 23rd June.

EAST VETS SUE & LESLEY FLY THE SALTIRE ABROAD

The French Senior Ladies International Foursomes were played at the exclusive Morfontaine Golf Course (north east of Paris) between 26-28 April. In the corresponding event last year (in Belgium), East Vets members Sue Penman and Lesley Johnston finished second - pipped by just one shot in the three round scratch foursomes medal play format.
