Autumn Meeting at Liberton G C 7th September 2023

A relatively small but perfectly formed group of our ESVLGA crew turned out to take part in the Autumn Meeting at Liberton GC today.

Not the hideous deluge of rain that scuppered our attempt last year, but we did encounter a real pea souper at the 9a.m. KO. I was rather concerned on arrival that we could start at 9a.m. as visibility was no more that 120 yards from the 1st tee. However, all was well as remarkably the course was open.

I was relieved being ‘the starter’ to see the first four groups all hit straight down the middle then literally disappear off the horizon into the fog but thankfully reappear 3½ hours later without incident.

Congratulations to our three winners Viv Mitchell with a fantastic nett 68 to take the overall nett score, Wendy Nicholson the Scratch winner with a 73 & Dorothy Thompson the Division 2 winner with a nett 71.

Well done also to the 5 players who had a 2.

Ann Sewell @6th, Carole Mason @8th & Joanne Watt, Wendy Nicholson & Jennifer Bryans all @11th.

Sadly one of our staunchest supporters, Elspeth Morrison, who had already decided this would be her last Vets competition, had to withdraw. We wish her well and hope she continues to get out on the golf course.

In other news while I am here..

I can confirm our AGM, prizegiving & season concluding lunch celebration will be held at Gullane GC on Monday 6th November, starting with meet up coffee etc at 11a.m then 11.15 AGM.

I intend to send my Captain’s Report (brief, I promise) out in advance so anyone unable to attend will be able to ask me any questions or raise points which I will respond to at the meeting.

More details will follow by email very soon.

Just be aware though, when I say celebration Lunch, I mean celebration as we have some very good news to share at this year’s AGM.

SVLGA Silent Auction

Please see below details of a silent auction arranged by the SVLGA management committee and team.

Ladies, we know a number of you regularly follow, via Facebook, the progress of the team representing SVLGA. Typically, over the season we support our team to play in two key events, namely an annual match against Irish Senior Ladies and the Jamboree played each August with our counterparts in the three English Associations, North, Midlands and South. As you will appreciate these events put significant demands on our budget, with the players and officials often personally contributing to fund certain aspects. In a bid to offset some of the costs for 2024 the team have been proactive in sourcing vouchers for four-balls at a number of prestigious courses. We would like to invite you to submit a confidential bid via email to our silent auction coordinator, Vice President Alex Glennie (svlgavp@gmail.com) by midday on Saturday 23rd  September or in person at Blairgowrie

Please indicate in your email which of the courses your bid is for, your name and which division you are a member of. Successful bids will be confirmed at the SVLGA AGM at Blairgowrie on Monday 25th September with the successful bidder being contacted by email later that week, this email will also include details of how to pay for the voucher.

The four-ball vouchers available and waiting for your bids are as follows:

We wish you every success and thank you for your support with this fund raising event.

East Division Semis & Finals Day at Haddington GC July 8th 2023

Following the Summer Meeting played at Haddington on May 23rd we had our top eight players  for the Championship Matchplay line up. The Quarter Finals were completed by players own  arrangements leading up to today’s Semis & Finals day.

Hilary Laughland beat Ann Sewell 1up
Wendy Nicholson beat Mairi Pollock 3&2
Anne Brownie beat Karen Marshall 2up
Karen Ferguson-Snedden beat Ailsa Cackett 4&3

Well done to all eight who qualified in May and well played to those
winners who made it through to the semi-finals.

Congratulations to Wendy winning 5&3 against Hilary
And to Karen winning 3&2 against Anne.
Commiserations to Hilary & Anne but well done both for putting up a very good game in their Semis and making Wendy & Karen work very hard to make it to their Championship Final  places

Not sure the local celebrity Albino Nutkin was wholly engaged with the matches coming  through the 9th hole this morning. And maybe at that time we spectators were a wee bit  distracted too by the Albino Squirrel!(I hear it is 1/100,00 to spot an Albino Squirrel in UK).

Our Sue Penman & Ann Sewell, thanks so much for coming out for the trip round the course  twice today & Hilary this afternoon, for all your chat, entertainment & for keeping our  ESVLGA a grand place to be.

What a lovely final for our East Championships today. (Repeat match up from 2022) The level of golf played, as expected, was superb by both Wendy & Karen. Karen knew she  had to play her best against Wendy & she did just that.

A very well contested match was played with Karen winning with an impressive performance. 4&3 the result.

Well done to all who competed in our East Divisional Champs for SVLGA play-offs.  We really do have a strong group of great players & people. It is my pleasure to be your Captain.  (Albeit a tad creased in the ‘Trophy Presentation’ Pic!)

Many Congratulations to Karen for your second win in a row as our Champ. All the best at  the SVLGA Champs at Blairgowrie GC (Lansdowne Course) in September.
