East Division Semis & Finals Day at Haddington GC July 8th 2023

Following the Summer Meeting played at Haddington on May 23rd we had our top eight players  for the Championship Matchplay line up. The Quarter Finals were completed by players own  arrangements leading up to today’s Semis & Finals day.

Hilary Laughland beat Ann Sewell 1up
Wendy Nicholson beat Mairi Pollock 3&2
Anne Brownie beat Karen Marshall 2up
Karen Ferguson-Snedden beat Ailsa Cackett 4&3

Well done to all eight who qualified in May and well played to those
winners who made it through to the semi-finals.

Congratulations to Wendy winning 5&3 against Hilary
And to Karen winning 3&2 against Anne.
Commiserations to Hilary & Anne but well done both for putting up a very good game in their Semis and making Wendy & Karen work very hard to make it to their Championship Final  places

Not sure the local celebrity Albino Nutkin was wholly engaged with the matches coming  through the 9th hole this morning. And maybe at that time we spectators were a wee bit  distracted too by the Albino Squirrel!(I hear it is 1/100,00 to spot an Albino Squirrel in UK).

Our Sue Penman & Ann Sewell, thanks so much for coming out for the trip round the course  twice today & Hilary this afternoon, for all your chat, entertainment & for keeping our  ESVLGA a grand place to be.

What a lovely final for our East Championships today. (Repeat match up from 2022) The level of golf played, as expected, was superb by both Wendy & Karen. Karen knew she  had to play her best against Wendy & she did just that.

A very well contested match was played with Karen winning with an impressive performance. 4&3 the result.

Well done to all who competed in our East Divisional Champs for SVLGA play-offs.  We really do have a strong group of great players & people. It is my pleasure to be your Captain.  (Albeit a tad creased in the ‘Trophy Presentation’ Pic!)

Many Congratulations to Karen for your second win in a row as our Champ. All the best at  the SVLGA Champs at Blairgowrie GC (Lansdowne Course) in September.

Captain East Division of SVLGA.

Scottish Seniors Amateur Championships at Aboyne GC

Huge congratulations to Karen Ferguson-Snedden on her victory at the Scottish Seniors Champs

this past week. And what a way to get the win after being 4 down in the semis against Australian

Sue Wooster winning on 18 and in the final playing West Vets Ruth Hunter and being 1 down

after 13 Karen turned the game around and sealed the Championship for a third year in a row on

17. What a fighter.

In the 36 hole stroke-play qualification, Hilary Laughland played two great rounds of 74 to

qualify in second place and in the match play event played her way to the quarters with a great

19th hole win over North Division’s Sheena Wood. The quarter final draw was tough as it put

Hilary and Karen Ferguson-Snedden up against each other. Karen won this one 2&1.

Also qualifying for the scratch match play were Caroline Steedman, Ailsa Cackett and Ann

Sewell who all narrowly missed out on progressing to the quarters with tough first round draws.

We had four qualifiers from East Vets in the handicap match play event, including Liz Calder

the top handicap qualifier by some way after two very impressive stroke play rounds. Liz had

two good wins in the first two rounds but could not see out the semi-final.

Your Captain Sal had a good first round win up 18 but the less said about her second round

performance the better!

Well played Karen Ballantyne and Jacqui Moriarty for making it to the match play bad luck

both for not getting past round one, especially Karen Ballantyne who lost on second extra hole

in a downpour.

I would like to thank Scottish Golf Ltd for putting on the Tournament, all at Aboyne GC for

being brilliant hosts, all the Scottish Senior competitors but especially all the East Vets at the

event for supporting each other all week and generally having a hoot with it.

Elise Duncan Trophy West v East at Lanark GC Wednesday June 7th 2023.

Today saw the end of a great run for East Vets in this annual scratch match versus the best of the West players. After 8 years of wins our run had to end, but certainly not without a good fight by our team. All the matches were hotly contested with some brilliant golf which made for a tight finish days golf overall. Lanark is very much a course where it definitely helps to know your way around so maybe a little help to the home team but that does not take away from either team’s performance. A grand day out for all & my thanks go to our wonderful team (Susan Rennie, my thanks for last minute call up!). Also, my thanks for West Captain May Hughs & Lanark GC for the ‘open-armed’ hospitality today.

Summer Meeting at Haddington GC May 23rd 2023

We had our annual visit to a dry and sunny Haddington GC for the Summer Meeting & East Vets Championship qualifier.  44 played round on what proved to be a tricky day with the course playing its full length. The later starters had a bit more of the breeze to contend with too.

Thanks to the Course Manager for the preparation of the greens and to Scott the Pro for organising the tee and keeping us right with the Club V1 system, he was most helpful.  Thanks also to the bar and catering Mum & Daughter team who were as always most welcoming.

Congratulations to all in the top 8 who qualify for the match play. Quarter finals are to be played by mutual arrangement by July 7th and semis & final will be played on July 8th. The Championship draw can be seen here

Congratulations to the Summer Meeting winners

Caroline Kinnard Nett 73 is the Overall winner (BiH)

Hilary Laughland 77 is Scratch winner (Better last hole)

Seline Stewart Nett 75 is the Division 2 winner

Full result can be seen here

Please come along to Haddington on 8th July and support our players.

East Vets v British Senior Men at Elie GC on Tuesday 16th May

A great day was had by all at Elie for this annual fixture.  We were greeted with drinks on arrival followed by lunch which allowed us to meet and mingle with our opponents.

The day didn’t quite get off to the best start as there was a ‘stewards enquiry’ over the handicaps.  Thanks to Wendy Nicholson for helping to sort this out, much appreciated.  Once this was ironed out we then got down to the most important part of the day, the golf.  For some ladies, playing Elie was a new experience but all seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. The course was in great condition and thankfully weather was kind and we stayed dry throughout.

All games were played in good spirits and all ladies gave it their best shot.  Sadly we weren’t able to do better than last years halved match and lost 4 ½  – 1 ½.

According to Andrew Gray this fixture has been running for around 20-30 years and he didn’t think the ladies had ever won!  That’s a statistic that we need to change in the future.

All games were discussed further in the clubhouse over tea and scones where the results were then announced.

Many thanks to Andrew Gray and the British Senior Men for hosting a very enjoyable day.  Thanks also to Elie GC for providing superb catering throughout the day.

Let’s hope that 2024 is going to be the year that we return from Elie with a positive result.
