SCOTTISH SENIORS AT ELGIN (1 - 4 JULY)

 

The Scottish Seniors Strokeplay and Matchplay Championships took place at Elgin GC with 20 East Vets taking part.  Elgin proved to be an excellent venue and the course was in great condition.  The Strokeplay Championship (over 36 holes) was won by Alison Bartlett of Royal Dornoch with a 154 aggregate (against par of 148).  Noreen Fenton (Dunbar) of East Vets was in a tie for second place on 156 and won the over 60s scratch prize.   Anne Brownie (Gullane Ladies) and Karen Ballantyne (Craigmillar Park) tied on 160 (11th place). Anne and Karen were joined by. Linda Grieve (Musselburgh) and Lesley Johnston  (Gullane Ladies) in the  Matchplay Championship  Draw. In the first round of the Scottish Seniors Matchplay Championship, unfortunately Karen, Linda and  Lesley did not progress into the quarter finals. Anne had a very close game with Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) narrowly winning 1 up (thanks to halving the 18th with a birdie).  Anne then lost her quarter final against another Seniors Internationalist, Alex Glennie of Kilmarnock (Barassie), in another very close match eventually losing 2 down at the 18th. The full results can be found using this link  Championship Draw.  Congratulations again go to Alison Bartlett who became the 2014 Matchplay Champion - the first time the double had been done since our own Pamela Williamson (Baberton) did it in 2005.  Alison is pictured below with both trophies

 

Away from the main event, the following six East Vets qualified for the handicap championship with Joanne Watt being 2nd seed:

As ever, a feature of the week up in Elgin was the great camaraderie among Seniors alongside the competitive golf. Over 90 ladies (and some gentlemen!) attended the Seniors' Supper which was a most enjoyable evening sharing good food, wine and reminiscences before the Cabaret.  Eliz Munro compered a highly entertaining selection of party pieces some of which were captured in the photo album below (links to photos at the end of this post). Chic Murray (alias Pete McNab from West Linton), community singing led by Elgin Ladies and a number of side-splitting/tear producing stories and jokes rounded off an excellent evening. (If you do look at the photos then yes, Karen Maxwell is holding a selection of "panties/lingerie" in her tale from babies to old age!!)

SUMMER MEETING AT HADDINGTON/CHAMPIONSHIP DRAW

What a beautiful, warm and sunny day for our Summer Meeting at Haddington on Tuesday 17th June. The course was looking lovely in glorious sunshine as in this photo of some of the blossom still in bloom:

 

 

For a few ladies, their golf matched the  gorgeous sunshine but for many, Haddington proved a stern test especially on the very slick greens. A number of tricky  pin placements led to tales of woe in the Clubhouse of putts which would not stop, never mind actually drop! Reminiscent of Pinehurst the previous weekend, it was all too easy to putt off the 17th green so close was the hole to the left hand edge and run-off slope. 

 

Umbrellas were raised, not for rain but to beat off the searing heat of the sun - so unusual for us East Vets, and such a contrast to the weather at the Spring Meeting!  The bar did good business with soft drinks - helping competitors rehydrate.

 

Now to the business side of this report and congratulations to the following ladies who posted good scores :

 

Overall winner and first in Silver with a net 72 (off 19) is Marion Glauch a new member this year from Mortonhall GC.  Four other ladies in Silver played under the CSS which went up to 75 on the day; they are (in order as determined by BIH) : Zandra  Mathieson , Anne Hanson, Louise Campbell and Dorothy Thomson who all had net 74s.  In Bronze Divison, the winner is another new Vet  - Jane Browitt of Glencorse who also had a net 74 with the runner-up in Bronze being Eleanor  Stewart with net 78. 

 

The Summer Meeting is also, of course, Championship Qualifying.  Two ladies broke 80: Noreen Fenton and Anne Hanson who both posted 79.  Noreen wins the Scratch prize on the better inward half but is unavailable for the matchplay stages. Anne Hanson as defending Champion is the number 1 seed in the knockout stages with the quarter final match ups below (the figure in brackets) is their respective seeding). The matchplay takes place in week commencing 14 July with the semifinals and final on Saturday 19th July.

CONGRATULATIONS JANE

The East Region Medal Finals run by the SLGA was held recently at Kirkcaldy Golf Club and was won by East Vet Jane Herd of Musselburgh GC,  Congratulations to Jane and Good Luck in the Grand Final on 7th September.

MATCH VS WEST VETS

It's said that a picture tells a story better than words! No doubt about who won the annual scratch match between West Vets and East Vets  for the Elise Duncan Trophy :

Anne Brownie (East Vice-Captain) presents the Trophy to West Vets Captain Anna Telfer.  Congratulations to the West Vets on retaining the Trophy with an 8 to 1  win, though some of the individual matches were much closer than the overall margin of victory.

The match this year took place at West Kilbride GC which was a great venue being in lovely condition and with wonderful scenery especially looking over to Arran. Above all it was DRY!!!!There had been torrential rain in the East the day before and it was still raining on the drive through to the West coast  but as we entered Ayrshire the rain went off and did not return. Despite the margin of defeat, many of the East Team who had never   played West Kilbride before would be keen to return having enjoyed the course if not the result.  Fortunately for the East, Lesley Johnston saved a whitewash.

As ever, the hospitality was super: everyone enjoyed the match and the opportunity to renew or make friendships - as can be seen from the selection of photos .

SUMMER MEETING DRAW

Let's hope for summery weather at our Summer Meeting at Haddington GC on 17th June.   This is our Championship Qualifying Competition; qualifiers need to be available to play the quarter-finals at a mutually agreed time in week commencing 14th July but please note that the semi-finals are at 10.00 and 10.07 on Saturday 19th July, with the Final at 3pm, also on the 19th July.  Please  note that the SVLGA Inter Divisional Championship will be played over the weekend of 20th/21st September at Strathmore Golf Club; our East Champion will play the West Champion in the first round.

 The Summer Meeting Draw has been issued to entrants  by email and may also be viewed via the "Draws" button.  Would entrants please note that £5 is due at check-in on the day (assuming you paid your £10 deposit on entry). Competitors will be asked to indicate on their scorecards whether they are available for the Championship Matchplay in July (dates as in the above paragraph)

We are trialling a new method of notifications of call-offs (hopefully not necessary!) on the day by phoning or texting a dedicated mobile  (07910907980) available only on 17th June. Any communications prior to 17th June should be to the Secretary in the normal way.
