UPDATE FROM THE SCOTTISH SENIOR WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations go to Sheena Wood of Aberdeen Ladies who won the Scottish Women's Seniors Matchplay Championship by defeating Ashley Rose of Royal Dornoch 3 and 2 in the Final at Fortrose and Rosemarkie GC. Well done Sheena.     (Sadly for East Vets who had reached either the Championship or handicap flights of matchplay as detailed further down this article, they did not progress although there were some close matches. Ah well, there's always next year!)

Day 2 of the Scottish Senior Women's Strokeplay Championship being played on the Black Isle provided a very stern test over Fortrose & Rosemarkie's challenging links as strong winds swept many competitors' golf balls astray! The gusting wind was held to be responsible for Fortrose's renowned gorse claiming many victims with double, triple and quadruple bogies (and worse) being recorded on scorecards. It was therefore no surprise that Day 2's CSS was Reduction Only, in contrast to the more benign conditions of  Day 1 when the CSS matched the SSS of 72.

Congratulations go to Alex Glennie who overcame the testing conditions rounds of  77 and 78 to become the 2016 Scottish Senior Women's Strokeplay Champion. Well done Alex.

The Strokeplay Championship also provides the qualifiers for the Scottish Senior Women's Matchplay Championship. Several East Vets put together qualifying scores though Karen Ballantyne (family reasons) is unavailable to take part. Leading East Vet, Anne Hanson (Glencorse) together with Dawn Young (North Berwick) and Linda Grieve (Musselburgh) will all participate in the Championship Flight. In the second flight of matchplay Jennifer Bryans (Harburn), Caroline Kinnaird (Glencorse), Morag Wardrop (Turnhouse) and Barbara Biggart (North Berwick) are the qualifiers from East Vets.  Jennifer narrowly missed out on the Championship Flight by being pipped in a play off  between five players for the final two places. Fuller information on scores and the matchplay draws in both flights are set out below.

Best of luck to all East Vets playing on Friday in, hopefully, more benign weather conditions.

EAST VETS WIN ELISE DUNCAN TROPHY AT WEST KILBRIDE

The annual Elise Duncan Trophy match between SVLGA West and East Divisions was held at West Kilbride GC on 14th June against the beautiful  backdrop of  the Isle of Arran.

East Vets, who had won the previous year's match at Mortonhall GC, managed to retain the Trophy by the narrow margin of 5 to 4 - a great away victory  for the East. There was some excellent golf from both teams with much talk of birdies in the clubhouse after the match. With so many close games, it was nip and tuck to almost the last match but thanks to a great team effort East Vets prevailed (see full results below).

A smiling East Vets Captain, Anne Brownie (left), is pictured being presented with the Elise Duncan Trophy  by Marion Stewart, Captain of West Vets.

All in all, a most enjoyable day in a stunning setting on a lovely golf course with wonderful hospitality from the West Vets and some great golf on show. For more photos of the teams before and after play click here

SUMMER MEETING - IN SUNSHINE

Luckily for our members playing at Haddington GC on 7th June in the Summer Meeting, we escaped the threatened storms although there was some thunder rumbling in the distance for a while. No rain, no wind .... what would that mean for ladies who have become used to battling the elements as well as the golf course?!

Barbara  Biggart (North Berwick) certainly enjoyed the warm, sunny conditions posting a scratch 79, net 72 off her handicap of 7 - the best scratch and net scores of the day. Pat Meikle (Lochend) also had a net 72 (gross 88); six ladies had net 74s and quite a few ladies played in their buffer zones. Congratulations to all who didswell since, as the rest of the field will bear witness, Haddington golf course held many challenges and there were several tales of woe about bunkers, bushes and other hazards wrecking scorecards!!!

The  results of the competition which was also our Championship qualifying (see separate post for details of who is playing in the quarter finals) are as follows:

Silver handicap
1.  Barbara  Biggart (North Berwick) 79 (7) 72 (bih)
2. Pat Meikle (Lochend)  88 (16) 72

The six ladies with net 74s in order after count back were  Morag Wardrop (Turnhouse), Liz Calder (Turnhouse), Pam Townsend (Murrayfield), Ray Lynch (Murrayfield), Janet Fairweather (Musselburgh) and Norma Richmond (Murrayfield).

Bronze handicap
1. Seonaid Stewart (Murrayfield)  98 (24)  74
2. Christine  Reid  (Kilspindie) 98 (21)  77

Scratch
1. Barbara  Biggart (North Berwick) 79
2. Anne Hanson (Glencorse)   80
 3. Pam Williamson (Baberton) 81
4 Morag Wardrop (Turnhouse ) 82 (bih)  (*)
5. Noreen Fenton (Dunbar)   82  (*)

Eight ladies had gross 84s so card countback determined who qualified in what position as well as who was available to progress (an asterisk signifies players who would have qualified had they been available). The 84s were shot by Sue Penman (Gullane Ladies), Karen Ballantyne (*) (Craigmillar Park), Ray Lynch (Murrayfield), Jennifer Bryans (Harburn), Mairi Pollock (Craigmillar Park), Jane Herd (Gullane Ladies), Janet Fairweather (*) (Musselburgh), Norma Richmond (Murrayfield). Norma was the unlucky lady to miss out on the last qualifying slot.

Seven ladies had 2s :  Christine Clarke, Anne McCartney. Pamela Williamson. Dulcie Barnes, Morag Wardrop, Pat Meikle and Barbara Biggart.

All the scores may viewed (click here).

CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHPLAY

Congratulations to the eight ladies who will contest this year's East Vets' Championship following the Summer Meeting on 7th June at Haddington GC.

The quarter final line-up is as follows (seeded placing in brackets):

Barbara Biggart (1) v Jane Herd (8)
Ray Lynch (5) v Sue Penman (4)
Pamela Williamson (3) v Jennifer Bryans (6)
Mairi Pollock (7) v Anne Hanson (2)

Leading qualifier Barbara Biggart was the only player to break 80 gross, posting a scratch 79 with Anne Hanson close behind on 80. Competition for the last places was close - going to card count back with the cut-off falling at 84. A few ladies whose scores would have qualified were not available to play in the Championship matchplay stages, including our current Champion Karen Ballantyne.

A full report on the Summer Meeting will be posted on Wednesday but meantime scores have been uploaded to the CDH and can also be viewed on Masterscoreboard (click here).

The semi-finals and Final will be played at Haddington GC on Saturday 9th July; spectators very welcome.

CONGRATULATIONS TO SEVERAL EAST VETS MEMBERS

Here is a quick catch up from  your Blogmaster ahead of Tuesday's Summer Meeting.   Fingers crossed this glorious summer weather will continue for a while longer.

Belated congratulations to Jane Herd of Gullane Ladies GC on winning the East Lothian Ladies' County Championship last month. Jane together with two other Gullane Ladies' and East Vets members, Sue Penman and Lesley Johnston, have all been selected for the ELLCGA Team in the East Jamboree later this month. Well done ladies!

Last week the Scottish Women's Amateur Championship was played at West Kilbride (where your Blogmaster was refereeing, hot on the heels of acting as referee at the Scottish Men's Open Strokeplay - hence the lack of recent Blog posts!!). Dawn Young of North Berwick GC, one of our new East Vets members, and mother of the defending Scottish Champion (Clara), qualified for the Clark Rosebowl Matchplay; Dawn put in a good performance, losing narrowly to the eventual Runner-Up - Wendy Nicholson of Baberton.

For information, the 2016 Scottish Champion is Ailsa Summers of Carnoustie Ladies.
